I’ve decided to host an IRC server which I call qct@ucd (where qct is quantum
computing theory and ucd is…UC Davis of course). I’m hoping that it can gain
some popularity among cs theorists and quantum computing researchers,
particularly around Davis.
How to connect
If you have a IRC client already you’ll just need to provide a server IP as
well as the port.
ip: qct.uberyb.io
port: 6667
If you want to install an irc client Wikipedia has a good list. Personally, I like quassel.
On the other hand, if you don’t want to install yet another piece of
software, there is a web client set up that is meant to access only this irc
at http://qct.uberyb.io.
Registering a nick
Registration is not required, but if you want a specific alias tied to
yourself so that other people cannot impersonate you, you will want to have a
registered nickname. After you join the server type in
1 | /msg nickserv register <password> <email> |
Where <password>
gets replaced with your desired password (no angled
brackets) and <email>
is replaced by your email. That’s all that’s
required!
Notes
- When you join, you’ll automatically be joined to the
#cs
channel. This is
primary computer science oriented channel. There also is a#help
channel
for irc related troubles. - Communications on irc are completely open. There’s no encryption, and the
chat is open to eavesdropping.
